Rise in SVOD subscriptions in UK homes

UK – There has been a rise in the number of UK homes accessing subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services in the first quarter of 2025, according to data from television audience measurement body Barb.

Barb’s Establishment Survey showed 20.1 million UK homes had access to SVOD in the first three months of 2025, compared with 20 million in the final quarter of last year.

Netflix was the most popular service with 17.4 million homes, up from 17.1 million in the previous quarter and covering 59.2% of all UK homes. The survey showed 28% of Netlfix subscribers were on its advertising tier of membership.

Amazon Prime Video was in 13.4 million homes, or 45.7% of UK homes, in the first quarter of 2025, up slightly from 13.3 million in the previous three months.

Disney+ was ranked third with 7.3 million UK homes, 24.8% of all households, but fell from 7.6 million in the previous quarter and 23% were on its advertising tier.

Elsewhere, 3.1 million homes had Discovery+, 3.1 million had Paramount+, 2.7 million subscribed to Apple TV+ and 1.8 million signed up to NOW.

Paramount+ had the greatest growth between the two reporting periods, rising from 2.7 million homes in last three months of 2024 to 3.1 million homes in 2025.

Doug Whelpdale, Head of Insight at Barb said: “20.1m UK homes accessed at least one pure-play VOD service in Q1 2025, showing continued stability in the market. The number of homes with two or more services grew for the first time since Q2 2024, reaching a new high watermark of almost 14.1m homes.”
